How to apply:

Starting from June 1, 2018 the DFG will fund for an initial period of four and a half years 8 new positions for doctoral researchers. These are PhD positions without teaching duty, provided with a competitive salary. There will be 4 additional positions on similar terms with starting date December 1, 2019, to be advertised in due course.

We are looking for highly-motivated applicants that hold a master’s degree in mathematics and whose scientific interests fit with the goals of the research training group. The doctoral researchers will participate in the common study program and conduct individual research under the guidance of their PhD supervisors. They are expected to obtain their degree within three years. Especially welcome are applicants with background in one or more of the following areas: Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Topology, Group Theory, K-theory, Model Theory, Number Theory and Representation Theory. Applicants should be fluent in English.

Here is the official job advertisment, the german version and the poster announcement for the first 8 PhD positions.

For your application, please submit the following documents in a single pdf file via email to grk2240 (at) math (dot) uni-duesseldorf (dot) de:

•   curriculum vitae

•   master's thesis (final or draft version)

•   academic certificates

•   short description of personal motivation

•   short description of previous teaching/research experience, if applicable

A separate letter of recommendation is also required, for example from the master's thesis supervisor, that is send to us directly from the letter writer via email. Please ensure that this letter of recommendation arrives on time.

Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. International applications are welcome, prior German language skills are not required. You may also apply if you obtain your master's degree in the near future. The deadline for application is March 1, 2018, although late applications might be considered as well.

Your contact person in case of questions is the coordinator Dr. Saša Novaković, phone number: +49/211/81-13186, email: novakovic (at) math (dot) uni-duesseldorf (dot) de.

Based on the written application, we will invite selected applicants to a colloquium, which will take place on March 15/16, 2018 at the University of Düsseldorf. Here the candidates will give a 30-minute talk, for example on their master's thesis or their current research, followed by a job interview with the principal investigators. In most cases, we should be able to reimburse travel/hotel expenses. The final selection of the successful candidates takes place shortly afterwards, including assignments to PhD advisors and the three possible locations Düsseldorf/Wuppertal/Bochum.

The official starting date for the GRK 2240 and the PhD positions is June 1, 2018. If requested, some doctoral researchers may start one or two months earlier, on some temporary grants. Under certain circumstances, it is also possible to start later.
